The Foundation: Precision Tool Measurement
Before this latest breakthrough, Zoller’s tool measurement technology was already an essential part of our system. Our CNC routers and FabCenters utilize grinding wheels to shape and refine materials with extreme precision. Zoller’s technology allowed these tools to be measured with exceptional accuracy, providing critical offset data that was then communicated to our machines.
This process ensured:
- Smoother finish with no visible tool lines.
- Extended tool life by mitigating wear.
- Increased spindle longevity by reducing vibration.
- Faster production speeds due to optimized tool geometry.
While this system delivered outstanding results, tool changes and maintenance still required manual intervention—until now.
The Next Leap: Fully Automated Tool Management
In collaboration with Zoller, Northwood has now integrated robotic automation into the tool management process. This new advancement eliminates the need for manual tool swaps, streamlining the entire workflow with unprecedented efficiency.
How It Works:
- Robotic Tool Handling – A robotic system now pulls the tool from the machine and transports it to the tool crib for maintenance.
- Fully Automated Swap Process – Instead of requiring an operator to manually remove and replace tools, the system handles all necessary steps.
- Cleaning & Measurement – The used tool is cleaned, remeasured, and prepared for reinstallation.
While redressing the grinding wheel is not yet part of this automation, Zoller is actively developing this feature, further enhancing the system’s capabilities.
