The Key to a Healthy Machine & Fab Shop

Your CNC machine is more than equipment — it’s the most reliable employee in your shop. It doesn’t show up late, doesn’t ask for a raise, and doesn’t take breaks. But to perform at its best, it needs care, attention, and the right environment. At Northwood Machine, we’ve seen firsthand what separates thriving shops from struggling ones — and it usually comes down to maintenance.

Here are the non-negotiables if you want your machines running like a dream (and not a nightmare).

1. Water: The Lifeblood of Your Machine

Quality AND Quantity Matter.
Water isn’t just for cooling — it protects your tools, extends spindle life, and impacts your finished product. Poor water quality or low volume is a silent killer.

  • Use clean, filtered water. NEVER run pit water.
  • ¾” or larger supply line with 45+ PSI.
  • Halo water: 10 GPM @ 45 PSI minimum.
  • Thru-tool water: 5 GPM @ 45 PSI, filtered to 25 microns or better.

Watch your pH levels!
If your water is too acidic or basic, it can destroy your spindle bearings, tooling, and machine components from the inside out.

2. Table Cleanliness & Accuracy

Your table is the foundation of your fabrication. If it’s dirty or unlevel, your accuracy tanks — and so does your profit.

  • Clean the table daily with a squeegee.
  • Use a mini texture head from Blick Industries regularly.
  • Check for flatness using a dial indicator and adjust machine leveling feet if needed.

3. Vacuum Pod Maintenance

Pods hold your stone in place — and they must do it with precision.

Do:

  • Store pods properly (not on gaskets, not dirty).
  • Inspect daily for delamination, gasket wear, or damage.
  • Use a tube cutter to trim vacuum lines monthly.
  • Clean fittings and pods with CLR or similar cleaners.

Don’t:

  • Throw pods. Treat them like the precision tools they are.

4. Tool Holder & Pull Stud Care

Rust, wear, and poor handling damage more than just the holder — they affect your finished product and machine longevity.

  • Wipe with light oil rag at end of shift.
  • Clean mating surfaces daily.
  • Inspect and replace pull studs regularly.
  • Never store tools on the machine frame — use a proper tool rack.

5. Monthly Machine Accuracy Checks

This should be standard in your shop:

  • Check table level.
  • Inspect tram (X, Z, and spindle).
  • Check backlash on all axes.
  • Measure spindle runout.
  • Monitor water output and mineral buildup.

Northwood LIVE can help track these. If you’re unsure how to perform these inspections — call us. We’re here to help.

6. Maintenance > Repairs

You wouldn’t ignore maintenance on a brand-new Corvette. Why do it to your six-figure machine?

  • Clean everything daily: spindle, rails, table, pods, cones.
  • Schedule annual or bi-annual Preventive Maintenance (PM) through your Northwood dealer.
  • Use Northwood LIVE to set automated maintenance reminders.

Skipping maintenance is a ticking time bomb.

7. Invest in People

Your machine will only do what it’s told to do. That makes your operator and programmer critical.

Northwood offers FREE training to all our customers. No excuses. Make sure multiple people in your shop are fully trained — your business depends on it.

The Bottom Line

Your machine doesn’t need lunch breaks, doesn’t make excuses, and doesn’t show up late. But it does need maintenance, clean water, and skilled operators.

Take care of your machine like you take care of your truck or your toys — and it’ll pay you back in uptime, output, and a healthy bottom line.
